is what i am describing overkill? i have tried connecting a USB3.0 portable external HD to a mac and then a windows machine and it doesn't work accept in ExFat, so connecting via ethernet does? i would eventually like to have redundancy from a NAS box, which seems to be the consensus, i assume i can connect, read and write class compliant (in Windows, Mac OS X and Linux Ubuntu) if using software like Mixbus (in all three versions, Windows, Mac OS X and Linux Ubuntu) in a NAS box running OpenSolaris or a deritivie, would i be setting up a server using server software?Įdit: reading more carefully, this deritivie looks better: Open source free desktop and server software, since i am not inclined to spend thousands on a closed-source, proprietary platform. An additional purpose of the OS was to provide a kernel allowing proprietary closed source hardware drivers to be produced for inclusion in an open source operating system. It aimed to bring technologies such as ZFS and Zones to the GNU/ Debian community. Nexenta Core Platform was the first operating system to combine the OpenSolaris kernel with GNU userland tools. Version 1.0 of Nexenta Core Platform was released on February 10, 2008. The Nexenta OS team has decided to focus on a minimal OpenSolaris effort called the Nexenta Core Platform (NCP) which forms the basis of the NexentaStor NAS storage solution. Since Nexenta OS does not use the Linux kernel, and Sun only recently began releasing the code of their Solaris operating system as free and open source software, it supports less diverse hardware than other Debian variants. Nexenta OS (discontinued October 31, 2012), first distribution based on Ubuntu userland with Solaris-derived kernel Strives to become an official Debian port.

If a NAS box is a computer running some type of Unix V, i am looking at quote: OpenSolaris is a descendant of the UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4) code base developed by Sun and AT&T in the late 1980s.
If it is running an OS, would it need to be a computer? Lets say i use a project drive, what is the difference between that and NAS box? is it that external drive is running an OS as opposed to just being formatted?

i am really going to try avoid Windows ($180, as i recall for Windows 10 pro) and build a Ubuntu mixbus computer, perhaps as a dual and eventually multi boot for redundancy there too. I had considered building separate computers for redundancy, so i could keep going on a project even if something went wrong with software or hardware in one system, i have 2 more, so this might give more credence to that.
